Contributing to Abya Yala News

The Eco-Justice /Health Issue of Abya Yala News will focus on the health, land rights and social impacts of large-scale "development"-which causes environmental damage and negatively impacts the community's health and culture. If you have information about specific cases involving mining, oil and timber exploitation, nuclear power plants, hydroelectric dams, pesticides, toxic waste dumping in Indigenous communities across the Americas from the Arctic circle to Tierra del Fuego please read the following:

Abya Yala News is a space for the Indigenous peoples of the Americas to publish their news. We are strongly committed at SAIIC to supporting Indigenous journalists and writers from all backgrounds and invite them to submit their articles to us. Our main focus is Indigenous peoples from South, Central America, and Mexico. However, in each issue we publish a feature article related to Indigenous peoples in North America (US, Canada, Alaska, etc...)

We also work with non-Indigenous contributors in each issue.

If you are interested in contributing to Abya Yala News, you should contact SAIIC before you start any work. Keep in mind that each issue has a global theme for which articles are usually around 2000-2500 words. We also include sidebars and other informational articles on the side which are shorter (+-800 words).

As always, we invite authors to submit photos to accompany their articles.

Otherwise, contributions must fit into the other sections of the journal: brief news reports (150-250 words), or Environment / Human Rights / Self Determination and Territory / Communication and Organization / Women (800 words). We appreciate photographs for these articles as well.

In general, our articles take the Indigenous perspective on things or, if written by non-Indigenous people, try not to take on a representative tone. Interviews are also regularly featured.

You may fax, email, or (preferably and if time permits) send your article on a MAC (or IBM) formatted floppy disk with a paper version, photos, maps, and all other pertinent documents.

After contacting SAIIC, send your materials to:
